According to a Recruiting Software Impact Report, issued by business software researc h company Capterra, about 75 percent of companies use an applicant tracking system (or ATS). These programs allow companies to gather data from job seekers and automate many parts of the hiring process. These database systems can also be used to filter out applicants who dont meet predefined criteria. For example, if youre applying for a corporate training position, the system may be tischset up to search your application and verify that you have a set number of specific keywords related to the role (such as curriculum design, facilitation, talent development, etc.). If your application doesnt have the keywords theyre looking for, youre likely to get a rejection or your resume will simply fall into the black hole of applications. This is why people who believe theyre a perfect match for a role might never get a call for an interview. If youre not using their language and citing the specific terms they want to see, youre all but invisible. So, when customizing your resume, youre rea lly trying to match the keywords found in the job description. Review the job description and note the keywords. First, read the job description thoroughly, and take note of the keywords used. Keywords are typically nouns or noun phrases that highlight a specific skill or set of skills. For example, project management, data analysis, customer service and business development are all keywords. The keywords used for each job posting may vary, but within the same field they will generally remain consistent. Take note of which keywords appear toward the top of the job description and those that appear frequently. The company is telling you, very clearly, that these items are most important to them. 2. Adjust the bullet-point accomplishment statements in your resume to match the keywords found in the job description. With this list of ke ywords in hand, you can now turn to your resume. Go through each statement on your document and revise the wording so you can incorporate the specific keywords they have used, in the exact way they have used them. For example, if you have referenced your expertise with Salesforce and the job description asks for a Salesforce.com expert, revise your resume to show the latter. This may take some creativity, but assuming your skills are a match for the role, the language adjustments youre making should be relatively minor. Finally, its worth your time to create a few new sentences, if needed, to cover all your bases. If the job description indicates that a certain skill is needed and its not specifically cited in your resume, add it (as long as you have the real experience to back it up). As you do this, crea te a master document that holds all the various accomplishment statements youve created. That way, in the future, you can simply pull the most relevant ones to build a customized resume for each position. Remember The job description you see online is your best tool. The company is giving you clear instruction about what they want. Dont expect them to read between the lines and figure out that your experience is a match. If thats what youre hoping for, its likely a human will never see your information because the ATS will filter you out first. This process becomes second nature once youve done it a few times. If youre applying for roles that you dont have much experience in, and for which your skills are not necessarily a match, it will be more time-consuming. Youll have to rely on transferable skills, but youll still need to follow the basic methodology. Lastly, be sure to save your customized resumes and note which companies you submitted them to. Oftentimes, Disney would fall asleep and curl up inside a sack of newspapers for warmth, wake up at daylight, and rush to schliff his route.To add salt to injury, Walt received no compensation, as his father, Elias, took all of the money earned.For the next six years, Disney would rinse and repeat this tedious routine.In Disneys biography,Walt Disney The Triumph of the American Imagination, historian, Neal Gabler, notes an interview where Walt Disney said, I was working all the time I never had any real play time.Whilst other normal kids spent their free time playing sports and socializing, Disneys only playtime was playing with toys he saw on the porches where he delivered newspapers.Worst of all, Walt had a rocky relationship with his father, Elias.Elias Disney was a hard, cold man, who never drank or swore, and took pride in imposing his authority as head of the home, and the fear of God into his children.Most notably, Elias had a volcanic temper, and as Walt grew older and Elias failed one business venture after another, Walt became the primary target of Eliass increasing anger and physical abuse.Walt Disneys childhood experience was so trauma tic, that forty years later, he often woke up to nightmares during which hed fail to deliver newspapers to customers and his father would await his report.3And later in his life, Walts relationship with his father had been so damaged to the point that Walt refused to cut short a business trip and attend his fathers funeral.Despite his rough childhood, Disney continued to hold onto his dream of building a cartoon and animation company.Back to Back FailureIn early 1921, Disney built his first company, called Laugh-O-Gram Studio, and secured a contract for six animations.Shortly after, however, the business struggled to generate enough money to stay afloat. And so, Disney tried to rescue his companythrough the production ofAlices Wonderland?- ?a short film displaying live human action with animation.Each day, Disney slept on the floor of the studio office, showered at the train station, and ate cold beans from a can. Despite his efforts,in 1923, Laugh-O-Gram went bankrupt and Disney wa s back to living in relative poverty.Disney was crushed and heartbroken. He felt like a failure for disappointing friends, family, and investors who had put their faith in him.He swore to make amends and traveled to Hollywood to become a film director.But after several months of looking for work, Disney conceded defeat. It was another blow to his ego. Another failure on his resume.The curse of his fathers life of failure seemed to be reliving itself in Walts life.Disney however, refused to give up. He got back on this feet and once again, reached out to film distributors to showcase his animation,Alices Wonderland.Disney was third time lucky.Margaret Winkler, a New York film distributor, got back to Disney and offered 1,500 dollars for six Alice comedies. The animation was well received, and the distributor ordered more animations.Shortly after, Disney and his brother, Roy, created the Disney Brothers Studio?- ?which later became The Walt Disney Company?.The rest is history.Disneys story is an inspiring example of someone who grew up in less than ideal conditions, faced adversity and failure, and yet, turned their fortunes around to achieve extraordinary success.Here are five lessons from Disney on how to stay motivated and bounce back from failure in life and work.5 Lessons on Staying Motivated and Bouncing Back From Failure1. Follow your heartThe journey to success is hard enough by itself, but its much harder when you go down a path that doesnt resonate with you.Too often, we attempt to garner energy and motivation to pursue a goal that we know deep down inside, isnt right for us. And so, when adversity strikes, we lose motivation and give up.Unlike most people at the time, Disney passed on working for his fathers factory and followed his heart to pursue his dream of a career in animation, even though the industry was very young and nowhere near as profitable as it is today.His father would often criticize his dreams and say that he wouldnt succeed, but tha t didnt sway Walt. It drove him even further, to the extent that whenever he faced adversity and failure, he had the capacity to bounce back and keep going.Trust your gut, pursue the goals that suit your natural skill set and inclination, andquitthose that dont.2. Go all inIn the game of poker, when a player goes all in, it means the player has committed their entire stack of money and risks losing it all.Likewise, Disney took the risk and committed his life to achieve his dreams.In an interview, Disney saidA person should set his goals as early as he can and devote all his energy and talent to getting there. With enough effort, he may achieve it. Or he may find something that is even more rewarding. But in the end, no matter what the outcome, he will know he has been alive.Its easy to half-arse our efforts and give up when theres a plan B. But when our backs are against the wall and there are no other options available, our survival instincts kick in and we follow through on our plans.If you have one foot out of the door, youre already setting yourself up for failure.Make your final decision are you all in, or all out?4. Invest in knowledgeThere is more treasure in books than in all the pirates loot on Treasure Island and at the bottom of the Spanish Main and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life. - Walt DisneyDisney was an avid learner and often spent his evenings after working hours, watching animations and studying films.As he read more books and learned from his failures, his self-confidence grew, and his incidents of failure diminished.This is no coincidence. Confidence and knowledge go hand in hand.The more knowledgeable you are at something, the more competent you will be at doing it. The more competent you are, the more confidence you will have. And the more confidence you have, the more likely youll succeed.When you enjoy the rewards of success, youll gain more self-confidence and motivation to keep going. Then the cycle repeats itself.5. Embrace self-delusionAt some point in their journey, successful people were labeled as delusional. But once their cra zy dreams turned to reality, they were labeled a success.Delusion and extraordinary success are two sides of the same coin. In order to achieve something that has never been done before, youd have to believe in something that nobody else does.Disney was delusional. Talk positively to yourselfYour brain is always going. Its estimated you say 300 to 1,000 words to yourself per minute. Olympic athletes and SEALs agree those wo rds need to be positive.One of the Olympians saidImmediately before the race I welches thinking about trying to stay on that edge, just letting myself relax, and doing a lot of positive self-talk about what I was going to do. I just felt like we couldnt do anything wrong. It was just up to us. I said, Theres elendhing thats affecting us in a negative way, the only thing now is to do it, and we can do it . . . I just have to do my best.SEALs use the same method - and they do it in a far more terrifying scenario. Howterrifying?Youre underwater with SCUBA gear. An instructor suddenly swims up behind you. He yanks the modulator out of your mouth. You cant breathe.Then he ties your oxygen lines in a kelend.Your brain starts screaming, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE. But you have to keep cool, stay underwater and follow procedure to get your gear back in working order so you can breathe again.And this happens overand over- for 20 minutes. Welcome to the dreaded pool comp section of SEAL qualifica tion.You get 4 attempts. Why? Because you need them. Only one in five guys can do it the first time out.The danger here is panic. And SEALs are not allowed topanic . . . even when they cannot breathe. They must think positive to keep calm and pass pool comp.So how can you use this?Got a big presentation at work coming up? Encountering obstacles? You need to remember the 3 PsPermanence, pervasiveness, and whether its personal.Pessimists tell themselves that bad eventsWill last a long time, or forever. (Ill never get this done.)Are universal. (You cant trust any of those people.)Are their own fault. (Im terrible at this.)Optimists look at platzdeckchenbacks inthe exact opposite wayschwimmbad things are temporary. (That happens occasionally but its no big deal.)Bad things have a specific cause and arent universal. (When the weather isbetter that wont be a problem.)Its not their fault. Specifically, ask yourself what you need to achieve right now.From the Olympian studyThe best athletes had clear daily goals. They knew what they wanted to accomplish each day, each workout, each sequence or interval. They were determined to accomplish these goals and focused fully on doing so.SEALs are taught to set goals too. Sometimes really small ones, but its enough to keep them going when every muscle in their body is screaming for them to quit.With goal setting the recruits were taught to set goals in extremely short chunks. For instance, one former Navy Seal discussed how he set goals such as making it to lunch, then dinner.And what happened when they achieved those goals? SEALs set new ones. The focus is on always improving. Heres former SEAL Platoon Commander, James WatersEric, this gets at my point of the SEAL experience, this constant learning, constantly not being satisfied. Thats one of the interesting things about the community you never feel like youve got it all figured out. If you do feel like you figured it out, you probably arent doing it right.If youre not willing to learn from other people then frankly youre not doing all you need to do to be the best operator you can possibly be.Its a culture of constant self-improvement and constant measurement of how youre doing. Thats a theme I think that all SEALs would agree is critical.So how can you use this?Ask yourself, What do Ineed to do to make thispresentation better?Write your goals downand track your progress. They used imagery to prepare themselves to get what they wanted out of training, to perfect skills within the training sessions, to make technical corrections, to imagine themselves being successful in competition, and to see themselves achieving their ultimate goal.Again, SEALs are taught to do the same thingWith mental rehearsal they were taught to visualize themselves succeeding in their activities and going through the motions.So how can you use this?Visualize that presentation. But dont merely fantasize about being perfect and just make yourself feel good. That killsmotivationResults indicate that one reaso n positive fantasies predict poor achievement is because they do not generate energy to pursue the desired future.You want to see the problems you might encounter and visualize how you will overcome them.Dan Coyle, the expert on expertise, says its an essential part of how U.S. Special Forces preparefor every dangerous missionthey spend the entire morning going over every possible mistake or disaster that could happen during the mission. Every possible screwup is mercilessly examined, and linked to an appropriate responseif the helicopter crash-lands, well do X. If we are dropped off at the wrong spot, well do Y. But how do you take that to the next level like the pros do?4. Use simulationsVisualization is great because you can do it anywhere as often as you like. They approached training runs, routines, plays, or scrimmages in practice as if they were at the competition, often wearing what they would wear and preparing like they would prepare.And SEALs didnt just visualize either. I am a 16 year old student that has schmelzglased several different employers with my resume and cover letter and have only received an instant reply from one. A few were advertised positions and the rest were general inquiries on my part. I admit it has been less than a week since I have sent them but considering I received a reply from one within a few hours, I am rather anxious and frustrated to hear from the rest too (I have refreshed my email around 20 times today, I kid you not).I understand that the job market at the moment isnt particularly keen on employing less experienced teenagers but ayaly the lower pay rate attracts them? Im also unsure whether my resume is a turn-off because I made a much more creative one that still clearly deliv ers the facts and figures, but is presented with color and more flair. Also the jobs I am applying for are cafes, juice bars and fashion stores. And no doubt my lack of real retail experience (I only have volunteer work) disadvantages me. Any words of wisdom you may offer?Okay, clearly I have to drop my preconceived notions about teenagers not reading career blogs, because you are the second 16-year-old in three weeks to write to me. It still surprises and impresses me though.It can take some employers quite a long time to respond to applications. A week is definitely nothing some take a month or even more. I tend to be pretty fast and often respond within a few days, but even I wouldnt feel ashamed of myself if it took me, say, two weeks. And lots of employers really do take a lot longer. In some cases, this may be because theyre disorganized, but generally its just because they have lots of other stuff going on that they have to deal with first. So stop obsessively checking your email.As for creative resumes, in certain fields if theyre well-done, they can be a plus. Im sure there are some HR people or hiring managers out there who consider them a deal-breaker because they want you to do things the traditional way, but in general I suspect most people feel like I do, which is this The most important thing about your resume design is that I need to be able to read it clearly, without straining, and I want to be able to quickly scan it and get the highlights. I think I need a vent-free week, is that OK?Of course, this is hard to say, especially to someone you truly like. But if you were the rolle being a drain on your friend, youd want to know, right?If They Want AdviceOffer it if you have it. If not, refer them to resources, such as an article, your HR department, or a career coach. If you feel its deep-seated or theyre not wanting to work on a solution, mention the help that a trained professional can provide. Its also fine to say, Thats a really complicated situation youre in and I dont know what Id do. Whenever Im in a tricky spot, I reach out to my mentor. If youd like, I can see if hed be able to chat.2. Help Them Frame the IssueWorkplaces are made up of people, and we know that theres nothing predictable about human beings interacting with each other. Your co-worker may benefit from a different perspective. But if it doesnt, disengage as much as possible. Reclaim your time and your self worth by recognizing the damage th is is doing to you and find ways to avoid these interactions. That can range from being busy with your work when the persons in the vicinity, to asking your manager for advice, to avoiding situations in which you know hell be present.
